In December 2016, the Peel Children and Youth Initiative released Youth Homelessness in Peel: Recommendations for a Comprehensive and Integrated Prevention Focused Approach.
The report looks at the current state of youth homelessness in Peel, summarizes existing literature and best practices, and provides evidence-informed recommendations focused on prevention, system integration, data collection and housing and supports.
The scope of this report was driven by PCYI’s School Years Planning Table, which identified youth homelessness as a shared issue requiring an integrated system response. As much work is happening in Peel related to youth homelessness, we have collaborated with many cross-sectoral partners on this project. A steering committee of partners that provided oversight and direction included Our Place Peel, United Way of Peel Region and the Region of Peel.
The report will inform Peel’s Housing and Homelessness Plan: A Community Strategy 2014-2018 and the Region of Peel’s Homelessness Systems report. Stakeholders are invited to use the report to inform system wide planning, collaboration and coordination.
The research used to inform this report was conducted in collaboration with Taylor Newberry Consulting (TNC). TNC, commissioned by Our Place Peel, simultaneously developed Youth Homelessness and Housing Services and Supports in Brampton: A Needs Assessment, more specifically looking at the needs of Brampton youth and the types of in house supports required in a new emergency shelter. Together, the two reports provide the best available picture of what we know about youth homelessness in Peel today, our current response and steps we might take to develop a more effective system-wide response. We look forward to the release of this report in early 2017.
